Link popularity is used by search engines to determine the
quality of your site and assign PR, or Page rank, which can affect
your search engine positions & results.
Link Popularity is
a Vote for your site
Sites linking to
you, act as a vote of confidence in a sense. Search engines
give more weight to your site if many sites link to you, so the more
sites who link to you the better.
Are some sites better
to get links from than others?
Definitely, the sites
that are of the most benefit to you are:
-
Authority sites are
the best, (if you can get one to link to you).
-
From a similar niche,
with content that would be of interest to your visitors as well
-
The higher the page rank
the better
-
The page that links to
you must be cached by Google
-
Not containing a "No Follow"
meta tag
Are some sites bad to get
links from?
No not really, you cannot control who
links to you, so search engines don't use it against you.
But there are some types of sites that are of virtually no value, so
don't waste your time trying to get them to link to you. These sites
include:
-
Link farms
-
Pixel advertising
-
Sites deemed to be "bad
neighbors" by search engines.
-
Websites with more than 95
outbound links on a page.
-
Pages that include a question
mark (?) in the url
Checking Link Popularity
Checking
your link popularity is easy, each search engine keeps its own list
of sites linking to you, and can vary greatly. Google often lists far fewer
sites as linking to you, than Yahoo, or MSN (Now called "Live")
But in our opinion a single link
found displayed in Google is worth 50 on the others. So try to strive for
links from high page ranked sites, which Google likes.

Link Definitions
Text links - Text links are best
for Seo, because search engines are able to read the text in the link.
Anchor
Text - The text used in the hyperlink
Link Description -
Text used to describe the site being linked to, but
not included in the hyperlinked text
Graphical links - are hyperlinked
pictures
Reciprocal links - Reciprocal
links are essentially a link trade, and although previously helpful with
search engines. Engines now are considering this an artificial way to
increase link popularity. and their weight is considered less.
3 way links - 3 way linking is a
way to avoid having the search engines see the link as a reciprocal link.
Example of 3 way link: Site
A links to Site B, in exchange for site C linking back to Site A.
Paid links - There is now talk of
this service becoming a target for search engine algorithms, who will
penalize those who participate.
